You may not have set off on a walking holiday in the south of France, but once in Lozère you could well find yourself eager to put on your walking shoes, all the better to enjoy its unspoilt nature and charming rural villages. Ramble at your own pace along tow paths or over the moors, drinking in the fresh country air and glorious views. Go hill walking too. Lozère is a rambler’s delight. End a day’s rambling with a traditional meal based on fresh local produce, at a country inn or hotel where it’s still a pleasure to serve.
Important Pilgrim Trails to the Shrine of St James
Follow age old walking trails - historic pilgrim routes to famous shrines, along well signposted Grande Randonnée (GR) trails through sleepy medieval towns and villages which were once significant stopping places on the pilgrim way. Take advantage of our
3-night walking holiday along the Via Podiensis, the earliest recorded and best preserved pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela.
Follow in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson through the Cévennes. Walking with a donkey (to carry your luggage and picnic!) is certainly a delightful twist to a more conventional walking holiday. But if you’re not too keen on the company of this 4-legged friend, don’t worry - just follow the RLS path with the help of a map and some local advice. You can in fact just follow a short distance - but enough to explore the natural beauty of the Cévennes National Park which the Robert Louis Stevenson path cuts through. The countryside is at times surprisingly Scottish!
Pause to admire the wild flowers Or watch a shepherd go by with his flock. Picnic on the banks of a lake or stream, or in the lee of an ancient stone hut.
